It is well researched and acknowledged that successful learning outcomes rely upon having a good sense of wellbeing. Ārahi time at NCG is just one way we aim to foster this with our ākonga.

Ārahi time occurs three times a week for 30 minutes with a member of staff (kaiārahi) who will remain in this role throughout your child’s years at NCG. Each ārahi group will have approximately 17 students (ākonga) from all year groups, which enables international students to work closely, alongside New Zealand students.

Our philosophy behind the mentoring programme in Ārahi time is:

To build stronger relationships with students to improve educational outcomes.
• To be future focused and up to date with 21st century learning, to help students to cope with our rapidly changing world.
• To help our students help themselves to be better learners and prepare them for a lifetime of learning. The core values of our mentoring programme are:
• Manaakitanga - cherishing and enhancing the ‘mana’ of others.
• Whanaungatanga - acknowledging and building relationships.
• Kotahitanga - shared understanding of our vision and a commitment to learning together.

A popular feature of ārahi time is the regular well-being and learning check-ins that students have with their kaiārahi throughout the year. This empowers our students to direct their own learning through oneto-one mentoring conversations using real time data.

All students are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of leadership opportunities in areas such as sports, student council, and cultural. This builds on experiences in their previous schools.

Our warm, friendly Counselling and Social Work Department is in the Library complex. We provide counselling, social work and everyday support for students who may be struggling. No matter how large or small the problem, we can help: drawing on the resources of our experienced staff, our Youth Workers, and a rich network of outside agencies.

There are multiple opportunities to do so for all levels and abilities: high performance athletes, competitive seasonal athletes, students that wish to learn a new sport and students that simply wish to be more active and socialise.

Nelson's safe and friendly environment has a great deal to offer its international students with a good range of shopping facilities, sporting opportunities, restaurants, and cinemas, as well as excellent educational opportunities.

Nelson has a mild climate with the reputation of being the sunniest city in New Zealand. It has easy access to beaches, mountains, lakes, and rivers, and boasts three outstanding National Parks. Our vibrant environment has inspired a dynamic artists’ culture. Our students benefit from the NCMA (Nelson Centre of Musical Arts) which is walking distance from school, local youth theatre groups and dance studios. Rich with artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, fashion designers, crafts, and music, you’ll love the unique and arty flavour of the region.

Nelson College for Girls is right in the heart of Nelson City on an attractively landscaped hillside, with plenty of open lawns and gardens available for students to explore and relax.

Our school activities often take us out into the beautiful surrounding countryside, for example:
• Outdoor Education classes might see our student’s mountain biking through the network of worldclass trails around the city and region, kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park or hiking in the mountains of Kahurangi National Park.
• Geography classes have a wealth of natural resources to explore, including Farewell Spit, the coal mining history plus modern tourism industry of the West Coast, and the local forestry industries.
• Science classes love to explore the marine biology of Cable Bay or spend time at the Mussel Biology workshops of our local Institute of Technology.
• The Environmental Group are often found planting trees along the region’s waterways, while the Science Club has a host of different environments to explore and local businesses to help us, such as the Cawthron Institute, New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, which is based in Nelson.
• Nelson is a hive of entrepreneurial businesses which are often involved in our Business and Commerce classes’ exercises, for example Pic’s Peanut Butter, Proper Crisps, Appleby Ice Creams. The list can go on…!
