Description | Kavanagh College has been a choice destination for international students since the mid-1980s. Students choosing to study at Kavanagh College are frequently independent in choice and have made a decision to explore a less well-known destination for a unique experience. Many come because of the reputation Dunedin has for a high-quality English based education set in a wonderful natural environment. Kavanagh College is a modern inner-city Catholic co-educational high school. Kavanagh students achieve excellent academic results with more Kavanagh students achieving University Entrance than the New Zealand national average. Kavanagh is a high decile school and we offer a broad curriculum catering for the needs of highly academic students whose goal is to continue on to higher education in New Zealand or around the world. We also offer flexible programmes that cater for those students wanting a very kiwi/outdoor/cultural experience to both improve their English and social skills. |

Student support | International students are cared for by a range of people including the Director of International Students, Homestay Co-ordinator, Year Level Dean and Tutor Teacher. The College has a Counselling Department employing both male and female Counsellors. We can also take advantage of the support services offered by the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic if required with same language staff available. |

English as second language | We offer a specialist ESOL programme at no extra cost plus preparation courses for students wishing to sit TOEFL, TOIEC, IELTS and Cambridge International examinations on request. |

Sports | Cultural: choir, A Cappella vocal ensemble, show band, jazz combo, orchestra, rock bands, speech and drama, annual production. Music tuition in most instruments is also available. Sporting: rugby, football, squash, curling, skiing, ice hockey, basketball, badminton, volleyball, cricket, golf, rowing, swimming, tennis, basketball, athletics and more. |
Application process | Open entry, please provide the student’s latest two school reports and a brief story written by the applicant. An English language placement assessment will be carried out on arrival. |
Features of the local area | Dunedin is a medium-sized city in New Zealand. We are a University City with over 20,000 students which makes it a great place for young people to learn, academically and socially. Dunedin is a harbour city with an international port and fabulous beaches famous for surfing and diving. You can visit the city website to check us out. Dunedin is only a few hours drive from Queenstown which is known as New Zealand’s adventure capital. |
Curriculum | Kavanagh College offers an extensive and flexible curriculum with a wide range of subjects available to meet individual student needs. Students do not have to restrict themselves to a single field of learning, quite the opposite, they may choose a combination of subjects from humanities, sciences, arts and performing arts, languages, commerce and technologies. Students may also study at different levels of the curriculum while working toward their goals. |
