Description

We welcome around 35 full-time international students from 10 different countries each year. Our school has an English Language School for Adults attached to it – The Language School is for those 16 years and older and is NZQA approved. Students can study either part-time or full time (20 hours per week). Many parents take advantage and do some study in the English Language School while their children study in the High School. Onehunga High School has been welcoming international students for over 30 years and we are well resourced with four full-time staff in the department.

Accommodation homestay,

Homestay placements are done carefully by our homestay coordinator and pastoral care is provided 24/7 for all of our international students.

Homestay placement fee –  $450

Weekly board for 2025 –$340 per week

Weekly board for 2025 (one to nine weeks) –  $350 per week

Student support

We run a Kaitiaki programme where every student is supported in their academic and pastoral programme. Each student will join a Kaitiaki group and have an academic plan put in place on arrival. This is regularly checked to make sure the student is achieving what they aim to achieve. We have a full range of teaching and support staff, counselling staff, health professionals and careers’ department to assist individual students. We have a full-time Dean of International Students and a full-time Homestay Co-ordinator available at all times for International Students.

Type of programs Long-term programs (study for 1 year or more), Short-term programs (study for 3-6-9 month), Study Groups, We accept students both long and short term students; places available from one day through to five years. We have been running study tours for over 20 years. We usually host around 12 study tours each year.
English as second language

We have a school ESOL programme for students who require ESOL support with two full-time ESOL teachers in the High School.

Sports

Full range of both summer and winter sports and other programmes like Young Enterprise, Robotics etc. Every international student is encouraged to participate in either a sport or co-curricular activity to support their integration and participation in our school while they study with us.

Please contact us at international@ohs.school.nz for information about enrolling. All students are required to complete a comprehensive written application form and provide two of their last school reports.

Features of the local area

We homestay in local family homes and the school sits 15 minutes from the international airport and 15 minutes from the city centre. Within a ten minute walk from the school is a local swimming pool, fitness/gymnasium, tennis and squash courts, Onehunga shopping centre; including public library, restaurants/café’s, shopping and train station. We are a two minute walk to a waterfront bay; picnics, walking etc.

Curriculum

We provide a full range of academic programmes (Mathematics, English, Social Sciences, Science) and we also have some special programmes: Business School, Science Academy, Sports Programmes, Performing Arts Suite, IT programmes, Building and Construction School, Services Academy)
