Description Golden Bay High School is a unique small (365) co-ed community school set in one of the most stunningly beautiful areas of New Zealand. Special features of the school are the study of aquaculture (salmon farming), world-class outdoor education opportunities in the national parks, tourism and hospitality and the arts. Students are encouraged to aim high, develop resilience, and work together for the benefit of all.

Accommodation

Accommodation is homestay with the homestay co-ordinator arranging it for the student.

There is full support for international students with the International Director, Homestay co-ordinator, deans and counsellors all caring for the students.

Special programs

Golden Bay High School is located in Takaka township, which is in Golden Bay in the northwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand/Aotearoa. Golden Bay is a coastal area which is bordered by two national parks – the Kahurangi National Park and the Abel Tasman National Park. Golden Bay has a population of about 5000 people, however over the summer months from November to March this can more than triple with an influx of visitors from all over the world. Golden Bay is loved for its natural beauty, its outdoor opportunities with safe swimming, rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, its arts and crafts and its diverse and welcoming community. Golden Bay also has a wide variety of arts and crafts, galleries and shops, it has a theatre, museum, restaurants, library and its own newspaper. Takaka is known for its alternative lifestyle, craftspeople, golden sand beaches and relaxed country lifestyle.

Sports

The GBHS offers a very wide range of sports with the addition of special activities of caving, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, hiking and snorkelling. There are clubs for music, judo, badminton, circus silks and aerial skills, riding, basketball and many others.
