Type of programs Long-term programs (study for 1 year or more)
English as second language

International students at Mentone Grammar require an appropriate level of English language proficiency prior to entry. Each student will be required to take an English assessment. The Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS) English report will recommend the length of time required at an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) at one of Melbourne’s Intensive English centres. The test results provide detail regarding the student’s abilities (stanine), current proficiency in English and are one of the measures of the candidate’s suitability. Mentone Grammar requires all International Students to take an English assessment twice (in some cases more). Once when submitting an enrolment application and again after completed ELICOS.

Other means of determining suitability include school-based assessments and conduct during the enrolment interview.

Students entering Years 9 - 11 should take the AEAS at least 6 - 12 months prior to their anticipated commencement date. We will recommend to agents that 18 months is preferred. This gives them time to plan their ELICOS studies to ensure they are ready to commence school at the beginning of the academic year. Please note the AEAS report is valid for 12 months. Students applying Year 11 must start in Term 1. Students applying Year 10 can start in Term 1 - Term 3. Students applying for Year 9 can start Term 1 - Term 4.

It is very important that students entering Mentone Grammar have reasonably proficient English language skills. In particular analytical writing skills will be required which presumes a certain standard of English.

We require a minimum AEAS score of 50 (intermediate) and stanine 5 (average) to apply and require a minimum AEAS score of 70 (upper intermediate) and stanine 5 (average) to attend a pre-enrolment interview.

Application process

Our streamlined enrolment process helps your family have a wonderful start to your time at Mentone Grammar.

Step 1

Registration

Parent(s) or an International Registered Education Agent submit an online Registration for Enrolment with non-refundable registration fee and required documentation including copy of AEAS results. The acceptance of your registration will place your child on our waitlist. Please note that this does not guarantee an enrolment; places at Mentone Grammar are offered according to waitlist priorities, in order of the date of application and at the Principal’s discretion.

Step 2

Review

The Enrolment’s Team will review the Student Application and supporting information. Families may be invited to attend an enrolment interview with the Enrolments Team. This may occur via Skype where necessary. It is the responsibility of the family to organise an interpreter if required.

Step 3

Provisional Offer

The School issues a Provisional Offer. When an offer has been issued, parents have 14 days to accept by completing and returning the International Student Agreement documentation, submit online New Student Profile Form with documentation and by paying tuition fees for one Semester in advance and the non-refundable acceptance fee. Offers are conditional upon the student reaching required English proficiency for the year level of entry. Reports from the Language School will form part of this assessment.

On arrival of the monies in the School Trust account (and receipted by our accounts department) a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document is created by completing the entries on the PRISMS data-base. This CoE is the document the parent(s) or agent use to apply for the 500 Student Visa, together with background check on the parents ability to pay our school fees, medical check on the student and other familial background checks on the suitability of the student to be allowed into Australia.

The student arrives and attends required ELICOS at an English Language centre in Melbourne. The student is visited by the School a couple of times to encourage progress and to acquire information to pass back to the parents (via the agent). Mentone Grammar will review students AEAS after completed ELICOS.

Step 4

Interview

Students are invited to attend an enrolment interview with the Head of Campus. Places at Mentone Grammar are offered according to waitlist priorities, in order of the date of application and at the Principal’s discretion.

Step 5

Enrolment Confirmation

Upon receiving an offer for a place at the school, parents have 14 days to accept by completing and returning the Enrolment Acceptance documentation. Families will then be contacted by the School with details of the student's orientation and commencement.
