Description | Hillmorton High School is a Year 7 – 13 co-educational state high school. We are a medium-sized city school, with approximately 850 students, including approximately 30 international students. Located in the south-west of Christchurch, we are about 10 minutes from the city centre, close to several sporting, cultural and shopping amenities, and the Port Hills. We offer:
Along with all of our staff, our dedicated international staff know our students well; we provide superb pastoral care - each student receives personal support on a regular basis. Our homestays are part of our community - integral to our students’ experiences. Even though we are not large, we are diverse. Our students come from over 40 ethnic backgrounds contributing to a rich and vibrant multi-cultural experience within the day-to-day life of the school. |
Tuition costs | NZ$13,900 per annum (or $400.00 per week) |
Accommodation | Students are placed with carefully selected homestays by our International Student Assistant ($270.00 per week for homestay accommodation). |
Student support | International students are cared for by the International Director and the International Student Assistant with Homestay Responsibilities while at Hillmorton. We pride ourselves on our personalised pastoral care of our students. Each international student is also placed within a whānau house and a small vertical tutor group of approximately 12 - 15 students. As well as being cared for by our all members of our teaching staff, their welfare is also the concern of their tutor, their house Dean and Deputy Principal. |
Type of programs | Long-term programs (study for 1 year or more), Short-term programs (study for 3-6-9 month), Most of our international students enrol for a semester or a full academic year. Some of our students remain at Hillmorton for the full five years of secondary schooling, with some choosing to pathway on to tertiary study in New Zealand. We have a limited number of short term programmes available. However, we are able to tailor them according to requests; they can range from cultural taster stays through to full immersion in mainstream classes. A short term programme typically consist of a traditional Māori welcome (pōwhiri) on arrival; homestays and NZ student buddies; an educational programme of EL tuition and/or integration in mainstream classes; educational and recreational experiences outside the classroom in a variety of settings and visits to Christchurch and Canterbury tourist attractions. We also offer individual places for students wishing to study for shorter periods of time. |

Features of the local area | Hillmorton High School is easily accessible by public transport and is within 10-15 minutes from the city centre. Christchurch is an exciting and vibrant city with a wide range of activities, events, places and opportunities for all. Studying in Christchurch means that many of the South Island’s scenic attractions such as Akaroa, Hanmer Springs and Mount Cook/ Aoraki are all easily accessible within a few hours travelling. Other tourist destinations are able to be visited with ease. |
