We are a vibrant and exciting coeducational and multicultural high school with an outstanding reputation for preparing students well for their futures. Founded in 1926 we offer high-quality education in an inclusive, positive and nurturing environment. Accommodation | homestay,
We arrange local homestay families for each individual student. Our international students are hosted by local families. Most of our homestay families have had long term connections with the school. The families will either have students currently attending, or recently finished at Hutt Valley High School. New Zealand homes are generally large and spacious with outdoor areas and pets. Homestay accommodation includes 3 meals per day and unlimited internet access. |
Student support | Some of our international students stay for one term, focusing on travel and experiencing a new culture. Others stay for three or four years and achieve New Zealand academic qualifications for tertiary opportunities.

English as second language | All students sit a placement test and will then be placed in a suitable English language course. Students can enrol in several English language courses, depending on whether they are sitting NCEA. |

Facilities | We are a large school with 1,900 students, but there is a space and a place for everyone, including our international students. Jodie Murden, the International Director and her team will get to know each student, especially what interests them, makes them happy, their goals, the sports or music groups they want to join and the academic focus they have for their time in New Zealand. |
Application process | All applications are completed by following this link: https://hvhs.enrol.school.nz/ You will need to upload a photo of yourself, your passport, a recent school report and your vaccination records. When we accept your application, you will receive an Offer of Place and an Invoice. Once the invoice is paid, we will send a receipt. The confirmed Offer of Place and Receipt will be needed to apply for a student visa. |
Features of the local area | Lower Hutt City is just 15 minutes from the capital of New Zealand - Wellington. Lower Hutt City is big on beautiful outdoor experiences, big on fresh produce from the land and sea, and huge on hospitality. Good public transport, short commutes and low levels of pollution help students to both easily travel to school and explore the Wellington region's many activities and attractions. Lower Hutt is an outdoor paradise surrounded by nature with a beautiful coastline, picturesque walking and cycling trails, tree-covered hills and acres of regional parks, forests and hills. |
Curriculum | At Hutt Valley High School we believe that learning is more than just academic achievements. It’s about giving our students opportunities to work hard and experience the kind of success that builds self-esteem and confidence to embrace new challenges. Our International Team and fantastic teachers support students to thrive by understanding their goals, and supporting their progress to help them achieve their best. Monitoring our student’s progress ensures that targeted individual help can also be provided. Families can also use the mobile app to view their student’s timetable, assessment results, teacher reports, attendance and more. |
